London - In memory of Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Kelly - Rosemary Whittle - watercolour and ink on paper

A slight change from the rest of this collection, Ripper’s London focusses not only a specific part of the capital but also a specific part of it’s history. The Jack the Ripper murders are famous worldwide for their brutality and their mystery as well as representing early examples of ‘new’ police work. These murders still fascinate and mystify people to this day. The red areas on the map show the sites where the canonical five were discovered. Mary Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Kelly will be forever immortalised in the souls of Londoners.

My map paintings explore how humans have left their mark on the world through the design of cities and landscapes. In this case I also explore historical events that make their spiritual mark on a city. I take these marks and transform them into expressive, fluid watercolour compositions, where the movement of paint mirrors the organic, evolving nature of the city itself. The interplay of pigments, blending and flowing together, creates a unique visual language—a landscape of colour shaped by London’s streets.

Colour is at the heart of my work. Throughout this collection, I experiment with colour combinations, layering different pigments to see how they interact and react. The result is a vibrant, atmospheric map that is both familiar and abstract—a celebration of London’s past, present, and ever-changing future.

Painted on watercolour paper, this artwork is perfect for London lovers, map enthusiasts, and collectors of unique cityscapes.
